FAQ

WHAT ARE STICK N’ POKES?

Stick n’ Poke or “hand poked” tattoos are created by the repetitive motion of the hand continuously sticking or poking ink underneath the skin. As opposed to a tattoo machine using an electric pulse to drive ink into the skin at a face pace, a stick n’ poke is created solely by hand at a slower and more gentler pace.

WILL IT HURT?

Anytime a needle is being pushed into your skin, yes there will be some level of discomfort. However, in my personal opinion, stick n’ poke tattoos are a much more mellow experience than being tattooed with a machine. I have both stick n’ poke tattoos and machine tattoos – the stick n’ pokes were far less painful and much more gentle on the skin. Stick n’ pokes however, do take longer to complete since the needle work is way softer and practically done by hand. Initially, the first few pokes will feel like a needle prick but the sensation eventually dissipates into a mild poking sensation. I would describe the overall feeling as meditative.

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PREPARE?

Be sure to have showered or at least thoroughly cleaned the area I will be working on. Bring food, bring snacks, bring water, bring a youtube playlist, bring you fav horror fiction podcast or sci-fi series (or whatever floats your boat), bring music, bring a sense of humor, bring awkward stories from current life situations, bring it all! Most importantly, I want all my clients to feel comfortable and relaxed during any session. Whatever you need to feel at home is welcome! Be sure to eat before hand – not a small snack but a full meal and stay hydrated! If you become sick prior to your appointment, please let me know so we can reschedule!

DO YOU HAVE ANY TATTOOS?

Yes! I have 31 tattoos – most of which are, you guessed it, stick n’ pokes! Areas I’ve had tattooed; my chest, underboob, both forearms, hand and fingers, thighs, upper leg and hip.

HOW LONG DOES A STICK N’ POKE TAKE TO HEAL?

Any tattoo should generally take 2-3 weeks to look and feel fully healed and a few months for the skin to fully regenerate. A stick n’ poke will take about 2 weeks to heal. This also depends on a number of factors. How big is the piece? Where is the piece? How long did it take? What is your personal hygiene routine? What’s your immune system up to? Are you taking care of your new tattoo? If all goes well and you follow the aftercare process as best as possible your tattoo should be fully healed within 2 weeks.

WHAT’S THE AFTERCARE PROCESS?

This part is VERY important to the overall quality of your new tattoo! Following our session, I will place healing balm on your tattoo and wrap it. I suggest keeping it wrapped for at least 24 hours but no longer then 3 days. Once you remove the bandage, its advised to LIGHTLY clean your tattoo everyday – making sure not to rub or peel off any peeling ink. Repeat – DO NOT peel your tattoo, allow the peeling to run its course and fall naturally. Keep your ink out of the sun, away from alcohol, out of unsanitary areas (its an open wound), do not scratch it (its going to itch but please don’t) and keep it moisturized by applying healing balm 2-3 times a day. Failing to regularly moisturize your new tattoo will result in a faded appearance – trust. I will provide you with a small sample size of my homemade tattoo healing balm. If you like, you can also purchase a full size from me here or in person. During the first week, your tattoo may appear as if its fading – this is because the top layer is getting ready to peel and reveal the color underneath. Don’t panic! Keep in mind I will send you home with detailed written instructions. If you feel you need a touch up after the healing process, shoot me an email with an attached photo and we can definitely work it out.
